History

The hill above the Danube has been settled since prehistoric times, and in the early Middle Ages it held a Great Moravian stronghold. In the 15th century King Sigismund of Luxembourg rebuilt the stone castle as a Gothic fortress, and in the 16th century, when Bratislava became the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary, it was given a Renaissance form. In the 18th century Maria Theresa turned it into a Baroque residence. After a fire in 1811 it stood in ruins for about a century and a half and was rebuilt only in the 1950s and 1960s. It now houses exhibitions of the Slovak National Museum and is also used for state functions of the parliament.

What to see

Visitors can see historical exhibitions of the Slovak National Museum and the Crown Tower, where the Hungarian coronation regalia were kept for long periods. A Baroque garden has been recreated beside the castle. The courtyards and walls look out over the Danube and the old town, and on clear days into Austria and Hungary.
