History
After the Treaty of Karlowitz the Sava became the border between the Habsburg monarchy and the Ottoman Empire, and Brod one of its key points. In 1715 the Austrians began a large star-shaped bastioned fortress here, which was extended almost until the end of the 18th century. It was a centre of the Military Frontier and could hold several thousand soldiers and some 150 guns. The army used it until the end of the 20th century; in 1991–1992 it was damaged by shelling from the Bosnian bank of the Sava. Since then it has been gradually restored and taken over by the town.
What to see
The sprawling fortress, with bastions, moats and ramparts, lies right next to the centre of Slavonski Brod. The restored cavalier – the central building around a courtyard – houses, among other things, a gallery of works by the sculptor Branko Ružić. Festivals and concerts are held within the fortress, and the ramparts look out over the Sava to Bosanski Brod on the opposite bank.
