History

The castle on a rocky ridge above the Litava river, at the edge of the Krupina Plateau, was built in the second half of the 13th century and first appears in the records towards the end of that century. In the 16th and 17th centuries, when the Ottomans held much of Hungary, Čabraď became a key link in the frontier defences shielding the mining towns of central Slovakia. In the 17th century it passed to the Koháry family, who extended it in Renaissance style. In the early 19th century the owners moved to more comfortable manor houses, and the deserted castle fell into ruin. Since the early 2000s volunteers have been working to stabilise the remains.

What to see

Trails lead to the ruins from the village of Čabradský Vrbovok and from the Litava valley. On the narrow ridge stand the tall walls of the palace, remains of towers and fortifications and traces of the gate, with views over wooded hills and the river's meanders. The area is protected, and the nearby Koháry and Coburg residence at Svätý Anton makes a good addition to the trip.
