History
In the 15th century John Hunyadi, military leader and regent of Hungary, transformed an older fort at Hunedoara into a grand Gothic castle with towers, knights' halls and a tall approach bridge. Work continued under his son, King Matthias Corvinus, whose name the castle now bears. In the 17th century Gabriel Bethlen, Prince of Transylvania, added Renaissance wings. After a fire in the 19th century the castle was extensively rebuilt, gaining many romantic touches. It is now a museum and one of Romania's most visited monuments.
What to see
A high wooden bridge over the moat leads into the castle, where you can see the Knights' Hall, the Diet Hall, the Matthias wing and a cluster of towers. The stone vaults and narrow wall walks are especially atmospheric. In the courtyard there is a deep well cut into the rock.
