History

The castle on the Kwisa River was founded in the 13th century to guard the border between Silesia and Lusatia, and over the centuries it passed through many hands, including a long period under the Nostitz family. In 1909 it was bought by Ernst Gütschow, a cigar manufacturer from Dresden, who had it rebuilt by the architect Bodo Ebhardt. Gütschow filled the walls with secret passages, hidden stairways and concealed safes. After 1945 the Polish army took it over and used it for decades as a holiday and training centre. Today it operates as a hotel and is open to visitors.

What to see

Guided tours lead through the halls, library and chapel, and guides like to reveal doors hidden in wood panelling and compartments concealed in fireplaces. The walls and terraces look out over the lake. The castle is a favourite setting for films and live-action role-play, including the wizard-themed College of Wizardry.
