History
The castle rose in the Middle Ages on a hill above the Kupa valley, by the road from Pannonia to the Adriatic, and in the 14th century it came into the hands of the powerful Frankopan family. In the 16th century, as the Ottoman frontier drew close, it became an important post of the Military Frontier; in 1579 the fortress of Karlovac was founded at its foot and took over the role of the main stronghold. The castle later passed to the military authorities and private owners, and in the 19th century it was remodelled in a romantic spirit. Restored since the 1960s, it serves the town as a venue for exhibitions and events.
What to see
Stairs lead up the massive tower, which offers a panorama of Karlovac, the town of four rivers: the Kupa, Korana, Mrežnica and Dobra. The castle rooms hold an exhibition on the history of the stronghold and its surroundings, and medieval fairs and concerts take place in the courtyard. A wooded park surrounds it, an easy walk from the town centre.
