History

On the site of a Slavic stronghold, Duke Barnim III began building a stone castle with the Chapel of St Otto in 1346. Bogislaw X enlarged it in the late 15th century, and in 1573–1582 Duke John Frederick rebuilt the whole complex as a four-winged Renaissance residence. When Bogislaw XIV, the last of the Griffins, died in 1637, the castle passed to Sweden and from 1720 to Prussia, which used it for government offices. Allied bombing in 1944 left it almost completely destroyed; reconstruction lasted from the 1950s to the 1980s.

What to see

Five wings enclose two courtyards. The rebuilt interiors house the Opera at the Castle, exhibition and concert halls and a museum of the castle's history, while the crypt holds the tin sarcophagi of the last Pomeranian dukes. The Bell Tower offers views over the Oder and the Chrobry Embankment, and in the courtyard a clock with moving eyes catches visitors' attention.
