History

The first defences on the rocky neck linking the town to the mainland date from the Middle Ages, and in the 14th century the Koriatovych princes enlarged them. From the 15th century Kamianets belonged to the Polish Crown and became the Commonwealth's chief fortress facing the Ottoman Empire, repeatedly modernised by generations of engineers. In 1672, after a short siege, it surrendered to the army of Sultan Mehmed IV and returned to Poland only under the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699. After the Second Partition it became part of the Russian Empire. Today it is a museum and one of Ukraine's most visited monuments.

What to see

A stone Castle Bridge leads to the Old Castle, where the courtyard and towers hold exhibitions on the fortress and historic crafts. The many towers, each of a different shape, include the Papal Tower, and the outer works of the New Castle are also worth exploring. The walls overlook the Smotrych canyon and the old town on its rocky island.
