History

Knutstorp in north-western Scania, then part of Denmark, was a manor as early as the mid-14th century and belonged to the Danish Brahe family from the end of the Middle Ages until 1663. The privy councillor Otte Brahe and his wife Beate Bille built a four-winged brick castle in the Renaissance style here on an island ringed by a moat, completed in 1551. While it was being built, on 14 December 1546, their eldest son Tycho Brahe, later the most famous astronomer of his age, was born here, followed in 1556 by his sister Sophia, also an astronomer. After the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658 Scania passed to Sweden. From 1704 its new Swedish owners, the Anckarstierna family, remodelled the castle, pulling down the north wing and adding a wing on the west, and it was restored again in 1728. In 1771 the estate was bought by Count Fredrik Wachtmeister, and it still belongs to his descendants.

What to see

The white rendered castle with its red roof stands on an island in its moat, amid parkland and fields near Kågeröd. It is privately owned and the interiors are not open, but the building can be seen well from the road. The estate runs forestry and farming, and on its land is the Ring Knutstorp motor-racing circuit, named after the castle.
