History
The hill above the Ljubljanica was inhabited in prehistoric times, and the castle on its summit appears in the sources in the 12th century as a possession of the Spanheim dukes of Carinthia. In 1335 it passed to the Habsburgs and for centuries served as the seat of the rulers of Carniola. The castle owes its present form mainly to rebuilding in the second half of the 15th century, which produced the Chapel of St George of 1489, and to repairs after the earthquake of 1511. In the 19th century it housed a prison and later homes for the poor, and in 1905 the city bought it. A thorough restoration lasted from the 1960s into the early 21st century.
What to see
A funicular runs up the hill, or you can walk up from the old town. Concerts and festivals fill the courtyard, ringed by wings from different periods. Look into the Chapel of St George, covered with the painted coats of arms of Carniola's governors, see the permanent exhibition on Slovenian history and climb the lookout tower, from which the Alpine peaks are visible on a clear day.
