History

According to old chronicles, the people of Dubrovnik built a fort on the rock at the western approach to the city in the early 11th century in just three months, to forestall the Venetians, who planned a fortress of their own there. Reliable records of the stronghold date from the early 14th century. In the 15th and 16th centuries it was rebuilt several times and adapted for artillery. The seaward walls are up to 12 metres thick, while those facing the city are far thinner, so that it could easily be retaken if its garrison ever rebelled. The fort remained key to the defence of the Republic of Ragusa until its fall in 1808.

What to see

Steep steps climb to the gate from the cove by the Pile Gate. The arcaded courtyard hosts the Dubrovnik Summer Festival's productions, above all Hamlet. The terraces offer one of the finest views of the city walls, Fort Bokar and the open sea. The fort also played the Red Keep in the series Game of Thrones.
