History

In 1606 Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau built Altenau Palace outside the walls of Salzburg for Salome Alt, with whom, despite his holy orders, he lived as man and wife and had many children. After Wolf Dietrich's fall in 1612 his successor Markus Sittikus took the estate from the family and renamed it Mirabell. In 1721–1727 Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt remodelled the palace in Baroque style for Archbishop Franz Anton von Harrach. A fire in 1818 destroyed much of the building, which was rebuilt in plainer Neoclassical forms. Today the palace is the seat of the mayor and the city government.

What to see

The fire spared the Angel Staircase with its putti from Georg Raphael Donner's workshop and the Marble Hall, now used for concerts and weddings. The gardens, with the Pegasus Fountain, the Dwarf Garden of Baroque stone figures and a hedge theatre, frame a view of Hohensalzburg Fortress. Strolling here, you will easily recognise spots where scenes of The Sound of Music were filmed.
