History

A stronghold at Ostroh is recorded in the chronicles as early as 1100, and in the 14th century it became the seat of the Ostrogski princes, one of the most powerful families of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The oldest part of the castle is the Stone Tower of around 1400, and Hetman Konstanty Ostrogski, victor at Orsha, founded the fortified Church of the Epiphany beside it. His son Konstanty Wasyl founded the Ostroh Academy in 1576, and in 1581 the Ostroh Bible was printed here, the first complete printed Bible in Church Slavonic. The Round, or New, Tower was also added in the 16th century. After the family died out in 1620 the castle changed hands and decayed, and it was partly rebuilt in the 20th century.

What to see

The castle hill is crowned by the Stone Tower, home to the local history museum of the historical and cultural reserve, and by the Round Tower with its Renaissance attic. Next to them stands the restored Church of the Epiphany. In town the Lutsk and Tatar gate towers survive, and the tradition of the old college lives on in the Ostroh Academy, revived in the 1990s.
