History
Fortifications stood on the isolated hill above the Latorica in the Middle Ages, and in 1396 Mukachevo was granted to Fedir Koriatovych, a prince from Podolia, who turned the castle into a stone fortress. In the 17th century the stronghold belonged to the Rákóczis, princes of Transylvania. From 1685 to 1688 Ilona Zrínyi held it heroically for almost three years against the imperial army, and during the uprising led by her son Francis II Rákóczi the castle was one of the last centres of resistance, surrendering in 1711. The Habsburgs later gave the Mukachevo estates to the Schönborns, and from 1782 to 1896 the castle served as a prison. Today it houses a history museum.
What to see
The castle has three parts, upper, middle and lower, linked by gates and surrounded by bastions. In the restored buildings the museum displays historical, ethnographic and art collections as well as former prison cells. The courtyards hold a monument to Fedir Koriatovych and a statue of Ilona Zrínyi with her son. The walls look out over Mukachevo and the Latorica valley.
