History

The castle on the western shore of Lake Starnberg was built in 1536 by Jakob Rosenbusch, a councillor of the Bavarian dukes, as a square building with corner towers. Over the following centuries it changed hands many times until in 1834 Duke Maximilian Joseph in Bavaria bought it and made it the family's summer residence. His many children grew up here, among them Elisabeth, the future Empress of Austria, and Sophie Charlotte, for a time the fiancée of Ludwig II. After Duke Max died in 1888 the castle gradually lost its importance, fell into decline in the 20th century and was converted into private flats in the 1980s.

What to see

The castle is privately owned and not open to visitors, but its pale towered block is easy to see from the public lakeside park and from the boats that ply Lake Starnberg. The former railway station at Possenhofen houses a small museum devoted to Empress Elisabeth, and nearby, off the shore at Feldafing, lies the Rose Island with Maximilian II's villa.
