History

Work on the Baroque palace at Hetzendorf, close to Schönbrunn, began in 1694 on the site of an earlier hunting lodge. In the early 18th century it was remodelled for Prince Anton Florian of Liechtenstein, and in 1742 the estate was bought by Empress Maria Theresa. On her orders Nicolò Pacassi enlarged the palace in the 1740s as a dower residence for her mother, Empress Elisabeth Christine. In later centuries members of the imperial family and their guests lived here. After the Second World War the palace became the home of a fashion school, which still occupies it.

What to see

The palace, its wings framing a cour d'honneur, stands in a French-style garden. The interiors, including the ballroom and chapel, keep their Baroque frescoes and stucco, but because the building is a school they can mostly be seen only during events and open days. On ordinary days visitors take in the façades and the garden, and Schönbrunn is close by.
