History
The stronghold on a steep limestone hill above Sümeg was probably built in the second half of the 13th century, after the Mongol invasion, and in the 14th century it passed to the bishops of Veszprém. When the Ottomans took Veszprém in 1552, the bishops moved their seat here and enlarged the castle, which was never captured during the Turkish wars. In the mid-18th century Bishop Márton Padányi Bíró moved into a new palace in the town, and the abandoned castle decayed, its ruin hastened by fire. It was partly rebuilt in the second half of the 20th century and opened to visitors.
What to see
A steep path climbs through several gates to the hilltop, and the walls look out over the hills around Lake Balaton and the cones of old volcanoes. The reconstructed rooms and residential tower house displays on the castle's history, while the outer bailey has stables and a tournament ground where knightly and equestrian shows are staged in summer. In the town, the bishop's palace and the Church of the Ascension are worth a visit.
