History

The palace was built in 1679–1691 for Count Václav Vojtěch of Sternberg, one of the richest Bohemian aristocrats. The design is attributed to the French architect Jean Baptiste Mathey, who combined the model of a Roman suburban villa with a French-style formal garden. The interiors are decorated with frescoes glorifying the Habsburg dynasty, and the outdoor staircase was adorned with sculpture by the Dresden artists Johann Georg and Paul Heermann. In the 20th century the palace was thoroughly restored and became home to part of the Prague City Gallery's collections.

What to see

In front of the palace lies a geometric Baroque garden with fountains and terracotta vases, and an oval staircase lined with statues leads to the entrance. Inside, the Imperial Hall dazzles with illusionistic paintings covering its walls and ceiling. The palace stands next to Prague Zoo and the Botanical Garden, and you can reach the city centre by boat along the Vltava.
