History
The oldest part of the castle is the pentagonal fortified residence, associated with the Counts of Celje, who ruled much of Zagorje in the 15th century. After their line died out in 1456 the castle changed hands several times until the Rattkay family received it in the early 16th century. Fearing the Ottomans, they added four semicircular towers and lined the courtyard with arcaded galleries. The family held the castle until it died out in 1793. In 1919 it was bought by the painter Oton Iveković; it later passed to the state and, after a long restoration, opened as a museum.
What to see
The castle towers over the rolling hills of Zagorje near the village of Desinić, close to the Slovenian border. Around the arcaded courtyard are exhibitions on the history of the castle and its owners, with weapons, furniture and finds from excavations. Also on show is a skull found in the walls, which tradition links to Veronika. The walls look out over vineyards and wooded hills.
