History
In 1629 Stanisław Lubomirski began building a new residence on the site of the Stadnicki family's castle; completed in 1641, it was ringed by bastioned fortifications. In the second half of the 18th century Izabela Lubomirska, known as the Princess Marshal, turned the fortress into an elegant residence with a theatre, an orangery and a park. From 1816 the castle belonged to the Potockis, and in 1889–1912 Roman and Elżbieta Potocki thoroughly remodelled it to designs by Armand Bauqué and Albert Pio. In 1944 the last owner, Alfred Potocki, took part of the collections to the West, and the castle became a museum.
What to see
The tour leads through dozens of furnished rooms: the ballroom, the sculpture gallery, the library, the Chinese and Turkish apartments and the castle theatre with its original stage sets. The old coach house holds one of Europe's largest collections of horse-drawn vehicles, and the stables display harness. A large park surrounds the castle, with an orangery, an orchid house and a small romantic pavilion.
